Johnson’s 380-yard effort is week’s longest
Dustin Johnson has established himself as the longest driver this week.
He took the honours in the first round with a blow of 351 yards down the 14th that was the longest of the day and in yesterday’s third round he improved that to 380 yards on the same hole. That was not only the day’s biggest, but the best of the week. Johnson led the US Open this year after a third round of 66 before crashing down to a share of eighth place after a final 82.
Measurements were taken at the fifth and 14th holes, the only two par fives on the Old Course that run side-by-side in exactly opposite directions, and also at the newly lengthened 17th.
Mark Calcavecchia, the 50-year-old former champion, can still move it out with the best of them. He hit the longest of the day 366 yards at the fifth hole in the second round. It was in 1989 that he won The Open title after the first ever four-hole play-off in which he beat Greg Norman and Wayne Grady.
Best effort at the 17th has been Bubba Watson’s 356 yards on the second day.
